Leadership development and character development are both one and the same. If your leader lacks character, you can count on him lacking the ability to lead. During my father's first year as a head basketball coach, I remember when he held his very first practice. One of the returning starters, the best player on the team, from the year before arrived to practice late. My father knew beforehand that this kid had an attitude problem and was nothing but trouble. Without wasting much of his breath, my father immediately dismissed him from the team and told him to leave the gym and do not come back. Some of you reading this might think that that was harsh. But if you want to establish a top-notch department, division, company, or team, character must come first.
