The kumbaya form of servant leadership is the belief system among those who think that in workshops participants are going gather around, hug and say how much we love one another. These types of workshops are full of theory and just way too academic for me. I do not teach my workshops in this manner.
Servant leadership is much deeper than that. I have been in the work world. I know the problems employees are facing with bad bosses. I know the challenges leaders face in trying to please upper management while at same time trying to get the most out of their employees. I know the issues presidents and CEOs face in dealing with a micromanaging board or worse the laissez faire directors who could care less. People in the work world have real problems, and I try my best to deal with their real-life work issues.
