In some corners of the servant leadership world, it is not acceptable to talk about the “self.” After all, humility is one of the ten qualities of a servant leader, so talking about “me” or “I” or “my” is just too effacing.
But in 2012 I want to change that. I want to talk about You! When someone asks, “What are you up to these days?” I want you to answer, “I’m working on me.”
“Everything begins and ends with leadership,” says noted author and speaker, John Maxwell. Who is leadership? You are. Bestselling author, Jim Hunter, describes leadership as “the skill of influence.” You have a level of influence with at least one person on this earth. Therefore, you are a leader.
I am firm believer that we have a leadership void in many organizations and one reason why is many leaders do not know who they are. They simply don’t spend time sharpening their own ax.
That is why in 2012, I want you to work on you and assist you on taking “you” to the next level.
To help you get started, I want to begin by asking you a question that I first heard posed at a conference last fall.
Your emerging self: What other interests and talents do you have that you are passionate about but you have not yet fully developed? What are some ideas you want to try out or focus on in the next stage of your journey?
