What's in Your Toolbox?

Recently, I had a conversation with a peer who works as an independent leadership consultant. He was in a transitional period in his life, starting a new career, after having recently lost his job.

I asked him, if I was an HR Director or CEO, why would I hire you?

His response, “I am passionate about what I do. I’m never late for anything, and I have an insatiable desire to learn.”

I responded by saying, “That’s fine, great, and wonderful but give me something concrete. Why should I hire you?”

He could not give me a specific answer. He was providing me with intangibles, but I wanted and needed to hear something tangible from him.

When I began working at the Pastoral Institute, whenever there arose an opportunity for me to be certified in something, and after completing the process, my former manager, Fran, would always say, “That’s another tool in your toolbox.”

Anytime a certification opportunity comes my way I try to take full advantage of it. In six years, I have become certified in two personality assessments, Emergenetics and Right Path, coaching, Winning the Workplace Challenge, just to name a few.

The next time a certification opportunity presents itself to you, go for it. It will provide you with an occasion to learn and grow and add another tool to your toolbox.
